Officer Involved Shooting Investigation – Update 03/14/17
NAPA, California – On March 13, 2017 the Napa Police Department released a statement regarding an officer involved shooting incident that occurred in the South Napa Marketplace annex parking lot, just north of Kansas Avenue, west of Soscol Avenue. (Please refer to the press release located at www.napapolice.com.)
Investigators from the Napa County Major Crimes Investigation Team responded to handle the investigation. This team is being led by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.
Today, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office has released the following information:
Multiple 9-1-1 calls were made from the area of the South Napa Marketplace where citizens reported a man who was armed with a knife. They say he was “attacking” shoppers in the parking lots. Napa Police responded and found the man in the annex parking lot. During the contact, the officers drew their service weapons and gave him verbal directions to get on the ground. The armed man did not follow directives and turned his aggression toward the officers. They fired their weapons. Medical assistance was provided but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The locked open folding knife was recovered next to him. Victims and witnesses were interviewed by members of the Napa County Major Crimes Investigation Team.
Napa County Sheriff’s Office has contacted the next of kin and notified them of his death. The man has been identified as 23-year-old Noel Russell of Napa. Anytime a life is lost, it is tragic. Our thoughts are with Mr. Russell’s family.
