NAPA, California – The Napa Police Department never wants to use deadly force, but on March 13, 2017, two officers fired their service weapons to protect themselves and the public. Around 6:21pm, numerous people called 9-1-1 saying a man was walking around near the front of the Home Depot with a knife in his hand and acting “high” or “crazy.” When officers arrived on scene, the man had crossed Kansas Ave to the north. Two officers made contact with the man and both fired their service weapons. The man succumbed to his injuries. Anytime a life is lost, it is tragic. Our thoughts are with the man’s family.
The Napa County Sheriff Department is investigating the incident as per the Napa County Major Crimes Investigation Team Protocol. It is early in the investigation but Sheriff’s Department Investigators are learning that the man was attacking people on foot and motorists with a knife. People have also told investigators that the man was acting crazy and confrontational with “everyone.”
Both Napa Officers will be placed on paid administrative leave while the Napa Sheriff’s Department conducts their investigation into this incident. The names of the officers will be released within a few days.
Anyone who witnessed the events leading up to or the event itself is asked to call the Napa County Sheriff’s Department Investigations Division at 707 253 4591.
